Interwiew with Raül Martín, in Dossier Empresarial: Attaining Stardom by Making Access to Information Easy
Transcription of Tomeu Ferrer's article
Can you become a key player in the world of information without being part of one of the existing industry giants? Yes, you can. And to do this, you must become an innovator in your field. And thanks to a it's product called eBD, Oasys Soft, a company based in Barcelona, is now playing with other key companies in its field.
Raül Martin is the guy who runs the show. ?We make software?. And our
star software product is eBD, which stands for ?e-business designer?. Its purpose, according to the company, is to make it easy the use of technology.
All webpages have three layers. At the bottom of it all, is user data stored in databases. An intermediate layer, known as the transaction layer, is what brings value to the application being created using this data. It could be an enterprise management application, or a webpage for e-Commerce, or even a service for streaming television program data over the Internet. ?Competition in this layer is the most fierce,? explains Martin. The final layer is the layer that the end-user directly sees, and it is in this layer that most companies, like Microsoft with its standard ".net" or JAVA System. And it is precisely in this last layer, that Oasys Soft has chosen to play.. and with great results.
So, what does eBD do?
The answer is simple yet also complicated to explain. With almost no effort, web developers can implement a user-friendly web portal without having to change or re-design any existing previously-developed applications. And herein lies eBD?s strength. In fact the Barcelonian informatics company assures that overall structure of a new web portal can be created, in many cases, with as little as three clicks. And this must be the case because clients who use eBD are companies of the highest magnitude.
This technology is currently used by RTVE to offer On demand television on its webpage. It is also being used by Terra as its e-Commerce solution, by D-Link, by Barcelona Tourism, and many others. "Our business model consist of two parts." explains Raül Martin. One is the sale of our global solution through licensing. The other is the creation of specific web applications done in collaboration with companies that operate in certain sectors, like 3H, a pioneer in software for hospitals, or the aforementioned Terra, or other projects that are currently in the works.
In fact, recently the company made an important strategic decision ? to either commercialize an exclusive license with a company, or to collaborate with the company to develop a concrete application. Previously, Oasyssoft not only sold the license, but also provided the implementation and other services. Martin explains that this change has been key, and although ?we have concentrated on building applications, in the end, what matters is creating value for the client"
Oasys Soft began in Barcelona almost 10 years ago. From that moment it hasn't stopped growing, although it has done so with its own funding and in the midst of much change in the Internet world, it has always made prudent moves that have taken it forward. The result is clear; the company has around 50 highly qualified employees at the moment. Anticipated revenues for 2007 are projected to surpass the 3.5 million euros, of which approximately 1 million will be ear-marked for research, assures Martin. But the growth of the business is the most significant. If 2007 revenues turn out to be 50% more than 2006 revenues, then in 2008, ?we will grow 100%?, affirms Raül Martin, who doesn't want to fix objectives on a longer term beyond that.
Oasys Soft clearly knows that the future is the global market. With this idea in mind, it opened its first office in Miami to attack the North American market. The second step in this direction was the opening of another office in Mexico City. To achieve this expansion, this Spanish company must work with local and international firms, as Hewlett-Packard did in Central and South America for its governmental software system.
Raül Martin clearly knows that research and wide-spread use of eBD technology are essential for making it in the software industry.
For this reason, Oasys Soft collaborates with academia. The University Autónoma of Barcelona (UAB) is one example in which courses were offered and professors were trained in this technology. Similar arrangements exist with some South American universities. Collaboration also extends to more specialized institutions like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the mythical MIT. Another collaborative effort, a little unusual for private companies, is the creation of user and developer communities who contribute to the company, help identify bugs and receive support for product development. The company also has open forums that allow for discussion: ?we are who we are, but the users and developers are much more, and we have to have an open constant dialogue with them,? affirms Martin.
With its face towards the future, this company, based in Barcelona, and now with offices abroad, considers all the new and spectacular opportunities ahead, like a portal for the artistic world in which artists, galleries and fans can converge, and exchanges of ideas, information and even purchases can be made with a few clicks. ?It could be the case,? according to Raül Martin, ? that an artist on the other side of the world goes to sleep poor, but wakes up rich.?
