Intranets and Extranets
When to share experiences and knowledge privately with employees, and when to share this information with clients and suppliers?
The Corporate intranet is a private network that belongs to a company or corporation, and is accessible only by its employees. It centralizes information and promotes the sharing of general company knowledge.
An extranet is a private network that companies use to share information with other companies, various suppliers, and numerous clients within a dedicated area.
Both itranets and extranets rely on the same internet technology (TCP/IP), so they share the same basic characteristics. The differences lie in 1)the type of user network and 2)the degree to which it is open to the public, with intranets being the most private and extranets the most public.
